Do I need approval to build a retaining wall?
Usually something is required once the wall passes about 600 millimetres, and almost always if it sits near a boundary, holds up a driveway or changes where stormwater runs. Some low garden walls are exempt work and need nothing at all. We check your address against the local controls before drafting and tell you whether the job is exempt, a complying development certificate or a full development application, so there is no surprise later.
How high can my retaining wall be?
Height comes out of the ground rather than out of a rule book, though councils do cap it. What sits above the wall matters most, because a lawn behind the top is a light load while a driveway, a pool or a shed is a heavy one.
